Are voucher schools putting the squeeze on MPS?February, 2007For seventeen years an underlying rationale for Milwaukee's private school voucher program has been that competition from private schools is needed to bring about improvements in Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS). This past school year was a golden opportunity for private schools to ratchet up their competitive pressure on MPS: the cap on the number of vouchers was raised and the eligibility rules for students were loosened. As a result, 17,951 voucher students are enrolled in 127 schools at a cost of about $112 million in 2006-2007.
